Lifting and moving valuable goods safely
RINGSPANN provides a wide range of components for intralogistics applications
In the current one-stop-shop of RINGSPANN you will find numerous brakes, freewheels, couplings and shaft-hub connections for use in the drive systems of conveyor and handling systems. They show their strong side especially where valuable products and semi-finished products have to be moved gently and safely over a long period of time. Read here about of concrete practical case studies in intralogistics applications in which the company's quality components are currently proving themselves.
Bad Homburg, March 2026. Designers of drive systems for storage and retrieval machines, conveyor belts, as well as lifting and lowering systems, will find in RINGSPANN a versatile supplier of industrial brakes, freewheels, shaft couplings and shaft-hub connections. The company not only supplies its customers with high-quality standard products from its one-stop shop, but also repeatedly shows its creative side when it comes to implementing special solutions. A look at recently successfully implemented projects shows the technological range that RINGSPANN engineering is able to cover here.
"Not so long ago, for example, it was the manufacturer of a feeding system for a high-bay warehouse for the intermediate storage of steel coils that used our products," reports Daniel Riedel, Head of Sales at RINGSPANN. In this case, we were able to help the customer with a specially configured and pre-assembled solution consisting of a custom-fit brake disc and a torsionally flexible jaw coupling with an extended hub. The situation was similar when a manufacturer of storage and retrieval machines wanted to implement a highly secure and accurate positioning system. This time, too, RINGSPANN was able to provide a complete braking system consisting of a hydraulically operated and spring-released brake and a matching hydraulic power unit. "This system solution enables the operating device to move the carriage into the shelves in a controlled and deep manner," explains Daniel Riedel. Elsewhere, it is the interaction of two spring-operated and pneumatically released brakes that form the emergency safety system of a handling system. In the event of a malfunction, they bring a carriage to a standstill and thus prevent major damage to all downstream components. During maintenance or at a standstill, they hold the carriage securely in position.
„Freewheel technology replaces old band brakes
The case was quite different when it came to the substitution of old belt brakes on the slow-running shafts of a parcel conveyor system. For this purpose, RINGSPANN engineers developed an innovative freewheel solution. Daniel Riedel explains: "The installation space was not sufficient for a standard freewheel in the function of a backstop. That’s why we designed a ready-to-install complete freewheel with our highly efficient Type X centrifugal lift-off and a special inner ring that was very easy to integrate into the existing drive train of the conveyor system." The customer thus received an extremely cost-effective, maintenance-free holding and locking solution and at the same time could continue to use all existing components. They can now save the previously high repair costs for replacing the brake pads.
Optimisation of roller conveyors
RINGSPANN was also able to offer a convincing solution to the problem when a well-known manufacturer of roller conveyor systems wanted to optimise the torque transmission of its chain drives. This was to be achieved, among other things, by improving and simplifying the assembly of the driving chain sprockets of the rollers. They were not allowed to slip under any circumstances, but they should be easy to replace. The compact shaft-hub-connections of the RINGSPANN Trantorque series are ideally suited to these requirements. "These are cone clamping elements that are characterised by excellent concentricity and can transmit bending moments. We offer them for shaft diameters from 3.0 to 35 mm and torques from 10 to 658 Nm. They are also suitable for fastening pulleys without backlash," explains Daniel Riedel.
The technical range of products and solutions that RINGSPANN provides in its one-stop shop for intralogistics goes far beyond the examples outlined here. It covers a wide range of standard conveying and handling applications and extends far into highly demanding applications in stage technology, leisure technology, cable car and mountain railway technology and passenger transport technology, which are highly demanding in terms of safety. "It is often the combination of components from our various product groups coupled with our decades of engineering know-how from many industrial drive technology projects that lead to optimal solutions for our customers," emphasizes Daniel Riedel. ms
Excellent performance and energy efficiency
A few weeks ago, RINGSPANN presented the MV FEM type spring-actuated and electromagnetically released brake callipers, which also offer numerous advantages in conveyor and handling applications. These are a modern disc brake solution that sets standards in terms of shifting performance, design and energy efficiency. They are available in three variants with clamping forces of up to 25,000 N, offer an innovative closing mechanism and can compensate for axial asymmetries of the brake disc. The new MV brakes from RINGSPANN are suitable for many holding, emergency stop and deceleration applications in mechanical and plant engineering, automation technology and intralogistics. They are already in use in railway and airport technology. They show their particular strengths above all where fast shifting in short cycles is required and integration into the drive technology environment places increased demands.
